Sometimes to feel sad, depressed or depressed – it is normal. But these feelings can sometimes be prolonged. They can also deteriorate, over time making it difficult to fulfill the basic day-to-day tasks. If you feel a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure from most activities during at least two weeks, you may have depression.
Depression is a serious disorder. “This is not something you can just “survive” or overcome without outside help,” says Dr. Kimberli Young, a mental health researcher at the University of Pittsburg.
Depression is not caused by something alone. Genes of some people are prone to depression risk. Stressful situations can trigger depression. Examples can be problems with money, loss of loved one or serious changes in life. Serious diseases, such as cancer or heart disease, can also lead to depression. And depression can worsen the course of such diseases.
People may feel depression during pregnancy or after childbirth. This is called perinatal depression. Others feel depression in certain seasons, most often in the winter. This is called seasonal effective disorder, or ATS. Regardless of what causes depression, there are methods of treatment that can help many people feel better. And researchers are working on new options for those who need them.
Depression may look different for different people. But there are some general symptoms (see Smart Selection insert). If you think you have depression, talk to your doctor. Some infections or medical conditions may cause similar symptoms. Your doctor can perform physical examination and blood analysis to find possible causes.
If you have a mild depression, your doctor may recommend you to try consultation or speech therapy first. “Therapy helps people learn how to get out of the bad state, looking at the world and themselves in a different way,” says Dr Michel Dallye, who studies depression at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Some changes in the way of life can help you feel better during treatment. Try daily to engage in physical activity and regularly eat healthy food. Avoid alcohol, nicotine and drugs. Follow the regular schedule of sleep. And stay in touch with people who support you.
People with more severe depression can benefit from medical treatment and therapy. “We have drugs that work very well in many people,” says Dr. Todd Gould, who tests new methods of treatment of depression at the Medical School at the University of Meriland. Drugs to fight depression and therapy sometimes work better together.
However, these drugs, called antidepressants, can begin to operate in many weeks. And there is no way to know whether they will work in advance. You may have to try more than one drug or a combination of drugs to find the right one for you. For some people, these types of drugs can have serious side effects that may require thorough monitoring.
Some people have depression, despite counseling and medical treatment. This is called resistant to treatment depression.
Some people with a depression resistant to treatment may benefit from the therapy of brain stimulation. They use electricity or magnets to directly change the activity of the brain.
Ketamine may be prescribed to those who do not feel better after taking at least two common drugs. Typically, methamine is injected into a vein. A type of ketamine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is sprayed into the nose to relieve depression.
“There are two exciting aspects of ketamin treatment,” said Gould. “One of them is that it works quickly.” He can make people feel better for several hours. “The other is that it works for some people who do not respond to any other drugs.”
The drawback of treatment with ketamin is its side effects, says Guld. During treatment you can feel strange, dizzy or cosmic. Some people may even feel disvalued, that is, out of the body.
Gould tests compounds formed in the body with dilusive ketamine as potential new methods of treatment. “We hope that these compounds will have the same rapid antidepressant effect as ketamine, but without side effects,” he says.
Testing New Therapies
Researchers are also working on new types of spoken depression therapy. The paint team is testing the type of therapy to help people focus on joy, excitement and other positive moods.
“Standard methods of treatment better reduce negative emotions than increase positive, – she said. But people with depression often have the greatest problems with the feeling of positive.
“We are trying to develop your ability to focus on the positive moments of your life and appreciate them,” says the beauty. “And in our early studies it was extremely effective.”
Young and her team use techniques called neurofidbek to help people with depression try to enjoy positive emotions and memories. This technique teaches people to directly control activity in different parts of the brain.
“Activity in certain parts of the brain is what allows you to use positive memories in a healthy way,” says Young. Real-time images allow you to monitor blood flow in different parts of the brain. “Then we teach you to make part of your brain more active when you remember positive memories.” This activity makes memories positive.
In order to prevent depression before it develops, Paint and other researchers are also interested. “This means that you have to start from a very early age. But preventing the emergence of depression will have a much greater impact than treatment,” she says.
Studies show that learning skills such as awareness can help prevent depression in children at high risk. Attention helps to focus on the present and what is happening inside and around you without condemnation. The paint team tests the plugin to teach teenagers such skills to manage intense negative emotions.
If you fight with depression, do not hesitate and do not hesitate to seek help, says Young. “We have gone through the times when “we don’t talk about depression.”
